Chicago Bears Sign Darnell Wright to Historic Extension

The Chicago Bears rewarded right tackle Darnell Wright with a historic, four-year contract extension on August 4, 2026. Sources informed ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that the extension totals $116 million, with $93 million guaranteed, making Wright the highest-paid right tackle in NFL history. Among offensive tackles, Wright's average of $29 million per year trails only Laremy Tunsil's $30.1 million that he received annually as part of an extension with the Washington Commanders in March.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles expressed enthusiasm about Wright's continued presence, stating, "As we continue to build our team and develop our culture, we are excited that Darnell will remain a cornerstone of our franchise as we work toward creating sustained success. Darnell has consistently elevated his play and the performance of his teammates since joining our team, and we look forward to his continued growth and leadership for years to come."

Wright was selected 10th overall in the 2023 NFL draft out of Tennessee, marking him as Poles' first first-round pick. The 24-year-old has started all 49 games he has played, missing only two games in three seasons. Despite an elbow injury suffered in Week 3, Wright earned second-team All-Pro honors and ranked fourth in pass block win rate at 95.2% last season. In addition, he logged the fifth-highest snap count on offense at 93.07%.

Poles noted that while Wright shows impressive flashes of talent, consistency will be key for his continued development. "Can he be consistent day in and day out, that’s the key part for Darnell," Poles stated. The Bears had previously picked up Wright's fifth-year option in May, showing a clear intent to retain him throughout the offseason and formalizing the extension after six training camp practices.

Wright indicated last week that he wasn't focused on his contract extension, believing he would be with the organization long-term. "Obviously, I know I’ll be here for a long time, hopefully my whole career," Wright said.

His role has been critical for a Bears offensive line that reduced quarterback Caleb Williams' sacks dramatically last season, from a league-high 68 as a rookie to just 24 in 2025. The Bears ranked third for the fewest sacks allowed per pass and boasted the NFL's number three rushing offense and tenth-best passing attack in 2025, largely due to the efforts and focus within their offensive line.

Head coach Ben Johnson highlighted Wright's power, noting, "He’s proven that he can do that and carry the load, if you will, a lot of times in the running game on his back. Very pleased with that."
