Engelbert criticizes divisiveness in the WNBA

Newsroom

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert denounced individuals attempting to "sow divisiveness" as the league confronts a debate regarding transgender athletes. Engelbert made her remarks on August 20, 2026, before the Indiana Fever's 91-85 loss to the Dallas Wings at the home of the Dallas Mavericks. Demonstrators gathered outside the American Airlines Center, similar to protests at other venues since Fever player Sophie Cunningham expressed support for restricting transgender girls and women from participating in girls' and women's sports in a detailed ESPN profile.

Last week, the league issued a statement condemning efforts to politicize the eligibility of transgender athletes in the WNBA. Engelbert's comments during a pregame event in Dallas were her first since the league criticized what it claimed were bad faith efforts to use the debate to "demean or marginalize others."

"People are trying to use the league to sow divisiveness," Engelbert stated as she sat alongside Wings CEO and managing partner Greg Bibb. "We're being the center of political football for people who have never watched the WNBA, never have written about the WNBA or reported on the WNBA," Engelbert continued, reflecting NBA commissioner Adam Silver's earlier characterization of the issue as a "political football" engulfing the WNBA.

The league's collective bargaining agreement specifies that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA," yet it lacks explicit language regarding gender identity or sex assigned at birth. Earlier this month, former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White announced their eligibility for the WNBA draft, claiming identification as women.

In a memo to team presidents and general managers this month, Engelbert mentioned that the league would hold discussions on the topic of transgender women participating in women's basketball. "There's always going to be haters out there, and we denounce it," Engelbert concluded. "But that's what happens when you have made it as a legitimate sports media and entertainment product."
