FIFA has suspended Argentina's Leandro Paredes for 10 international matches due to his involvement in clashes during the World Cup final against Spain in July. Paredes, who plays for Boca Juniors, was also fined $90,000.
The decision, announced on August 21, 2026, follows incidents that occurred post-match, when a brief scuffle erupted at the final whistle after Spain's 1-0 victory at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19. Paredes was seen grabbing Eric Garcia by the throat and tackling Spain’s Gavi to the ground as Spanish substitutes rushed the field to celebrate their victory.
Alongside Paredes, several of his Argentina teammates received sanctions from FIFA for their actions. Nahuel Molina was handed a seven-match ban and a fine of $90,000, while Thiago Almada received a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine. Spain’s Gavi was also subjected to a similar penalty for his involvement in the incident.
In addition to player sanctions, the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) was fined $321,000 for violating FIFA’s disciplinary codes, which included improper use of a sports event for non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, and discriminatory behavior from its supporters. This misconduct included an incident where Argentina players displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas Son Argentinas" following their semi-final win over England, referencing the controversial status of the Falkland Islands.
In response, the AFA announced plans to appeal the suspensions and fines imposed on its players.
