Phil Salt Advocates for Longer Hundred Schedule

Phil Salt, captain of Welsh Fire, expressed his desire for an extension of the competition schedule for The Hundred, suggesting it should last a week longer. This appeal comes after Welsh Fire played three matches in just five days, which Salt described as "a little bit hectic."

Following their win against Birmingham Phoenix on Saturday, Welsh Fire secured a victory over Southern Brave in Cardiff on Monday evening but faced a defeat against Manchester Super Giants on Wednesday afternoon. In his comments to BBC Sport, Salt highlighted the challenges of managing player fatigue during such a compressed schedule. He stated, "It’s a lot to be honest with you in five days and managing bodies through. From a player’s point of view I’d like this competition to be probably a week longer."

The Hundred's group stage occurs over 23 days, during which teams are scheduled to play eight games. This contrasts sharply with the format of the Indian Premier League, where teams engage in 14 group matches across 56 days, and last season’s Big Bash League teams played 10 group games within 36 days. Since its establishment in 2021, The Hundred has further complicated the already tight schedule of English cricket, prompting ongoing concerns from the Professional Cricketers Association (PCA) regarding player welfare.

Daryl Mitchell, PCA chief executive, has noted concerns about player burnout linked to the current condensed end-of-season schedule. He pointed out that while the County Championship remains unchanged, the reduction of two matches from the T20 Blast raises serious issues about the mental and physical strains on players.

Salt recognized the difficulties in modifying the existing schedule, while also noting the toll it takes on his team. He remarked on the physical presence of their star players, such as the 6ft 8in tall Marco Jansen and Lockie Ferguson, humorously mentioning, "They’ve done a lot of time on the bus in the last three days! A bus that’s not built for lads that size."

He reiterated his desire for more time between matches, while acknowledging that finding such flexibility in the calendar is challenging. "I’m not the man for the answer on the schedule, I just like to magic another week of the year somewhere!"

Welsh Fire is scheduled to return to action at Headingley on Sunday at 14:30 BST against Sunrisers Leeds, followed by their final group game at home against London Spirit next Wednesday.
