Volta a Portugal: Leangel Linarez avoids late crash to win stage 3

In stage 3 of the Volta a Portugal, Leangel Linarez successfully avoided a late crash and led his team, Tavfer-Ovos Matinados-Mortágua, to a one-two finish. The race covered 182.2 kilometers from Beja to Elvas, culminating in a strung-out sprint. Linarez's teammate, João Matias, celebrated a strong second place, completing a remarkable day for the Tavfer-Ovos Matinados-Mortágua team. For the second consecutive day, Tomas Contte from Aviludo-Louletano-Loulé secured third place, while Rui Oliveira, the race leader from UAE Team Emirates-XRG, initiated a sprint earlier in the race but ended up finishing fifth. This allowed Oliveira to retain his position in the general classification with a three-second lead over rival Rafael Reis from Anicolor-Campicarn.

Linarez reflected on the stage, noting the importance of the race for sprinters, stating, "We knew this was practically the last opportunity for the sprinters. We rode well and stayed calm. I almost crashed in the final kilometre, but I still had the legs to get to the front and win."

The thrilling sprint unfolded as a breakaway group consisting of Ronan O'Connor (APS Pro Cycling by Team Cadence Cyclery), José Moreira (GI Group Holding-Simoldes-UDO), Gonçalo Rodrigues (Óbidos Cycling Team), and Joshua Lebo (Meridian Racing p/b De La Uz) was caught just under a kilometre from the finish. Unfortunately, Rodrigues crashed after overshooting the exit of a roundabout, affecting several riders during the final run to the line. Ruiz Oliveira's early launch was overshadowed as he was overtaken before the finish line.

As the competitors prepare for stage 4, which promises a challenging 4,040m elevation gain over 154.6 kilometers concluding at Torre, Linarez's victory marks a significant moment in the ongoing nine-stage event.
