Ben Duckett Reflects on England's Drinking Scandals

Ben Duckett expressed regret over letting his country down in light of the recent drinking scandals surrounding the England cricket team. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he acknowledged that people will be critical of the team for a while, and he believes this is justified.

Duckett shared his insights following a talk given by captain Joe Root to the team just days before the first Test against Pakistan, after player Brydon Carse had a troubling incident outside a Derby nightclub. Feeling the weight of his own past mistakes, including late-night antics during the Ashes tour which had been caught on camera by a spectator, Duckett felt compelled to support Root's message.

As one of the more experienced players in a relatively young squad—only Root has more caps—Duckett understood the importance of stepping up during challenging times. "In those situations, anyone can talk," Duckett stated. "But from someone who’s been in situations like that, who’s let the group down, let the country down, it felt important for me."

Duckett is aware of the criticisms Root has faced from media on behalf of England cricket, and he emphasized the need for other players to help share that burden of leadership. He mentioned, "It’s up to me, Brooky and a few of the other guys to take some of that off his plate and help lead as much as we can.”

In the dressing room at Lord’s, Duckett conveyed the message that it was time to move forward and focus on representing England with pride. He maintained that, despite the summer's controversies, only a small number of players were responsible for the issues that have arisen, and he aimed to distance the larger team from these missteps.

Duckett believes that the team has learned from their experiences and needs to focus on winning matches to restore public confidence. He explained, "The fans want to see us winning games and series, and that’s the easiest thing to put right. The rest of it’s going to come in time, and people are probably going to be on our case for a little while. Rightly so: we’ve made that very easy for them.”

Demonstrating his commitment, Duckett turned down a lucrative £200,000 contract with Delhi Capitals in March, choosing to invest his energy into red-ball cricket instead following a tough Ashes campaign.
