Calvin Bassey Calls Captaincy of Fulham Unbelievable

Calvin Bassey described his appointment as captain of Fulham as a "privilege," emphasizing that taking responsibility for the Premier League side has come naturally to him. Bassey, who plays as a center-back, has worn the captain’s armband in each of Fulham’s first three Premier League games of the season, following his being handed this responsibility by new manager Álvaro Arbeloa, who sees him as a strong leader within the squad.

Despite the honor, Bassey stated that the captaincy has not altered his personality or approach to his role within the team. He mentioned that his experience and position on the pitch naturally helped him develop leadership qualities. "Being able to captain this club is unbelievable," Bassey explained. "Going into my fourth season, I know the boys and get on with everyone, so I just be myself and try to help everyone. Leading comes naturally because of the position I play, being able to see everything and having to communicate as a centre-half."

Bassey maintained that supporters should not expect him to change as a person inside the dressing room, particularly when results are not favorable for Fulham. He characterized himself as a calm presence who prefers to keep positive energy rather than resort to harsh criticism of teammates. "Nah, not really, that’s not me! I’m more chill. Before the game, I’m just happy, smiling as always. I want everyone to go in with good energy."

The defender acknowledged that frustration is a part of the game but stressed the importance of handling emotions constructively. "I know everyone goes out there and gives 100 percent, and sometimes we’re just not able to win. I know they’re frustrated, I’m frustrated, but I think sometimes it’s best to leave people be and then speak about it later."

Bassey’s captaincy also involves mentoring younger players, such as 19-year-old Josh King, who has recently scored twice for Fulham this season. He shared that King’s mother has trusted him to keep the young player in check if necessary. "His mum’s told me to look after him, so I know I can stick it on him if he gets too big for his boots!"

Looking at the broader picture, Fulham continues searching for their first points of the season, but Bassey perceives positive signs in their performances. He expressed confidence in the team’s growth under manager Arbeloa, stating, "I’m excited. You can see from the way we’ve played that there are many positives. We’ve only been with him for two months, so it’s very new; it’s good that we’ve been able to put in performances that we can take positives from."
