Neville criticizes Manchester United's performance

Gary Neville criticized Manchester United's performance following a 1-1 draw against Fulham. The former United captain stated that he watched Manchester United since the age of five and described the team's effort as "absolutely pathetic." This comment came after an own goal by Lisandro Martinez allowed Fulham to take the lead early in the second half. Despite this bleak portrayal, United managed to equalize with Matheus Cunha's deflected strike in the 89th minute.

Neville reflected on United's poor showing, noting that the last 15 minutes he witnessed were some of the worst in his experiences as a fan. He expressed concerns about the team’s effort, suggesting that there must be concern from Michael Carrick, United's manager. This criticism followed a series of disappointing results for the team, which included a recent loss to Manchester City despite City playing with ten men and a defeat against Brighton at home after leading by two goals.

Questions regarding the players' fitness have been lingering since pre-season, particularly highlighted by Youri Tielemans' comments that United did not prioritize fitness in their training. Although Cunha disagreed with Neville's assessment, he acknowledged that Fulham showed more energy during parts of the match, indicating an ongoing concern about United's performance levels.

Carrick, however, defended his players, emphasizing the positive aspect of their ability to equalize and maintain pressure in the closing stages of the game. He insisted that the team’s fitness was not an issue, stating that they finished strongly, which contradicted the comments made by Neville. Carrick remarked that the supporters remained supportive throughout the match and noted the emotional nature of fans reacting to team decisions.

The draw left Manchester United with five points from five matches, currently placing them 12th in the league, significantly behind Manchester City. Key players, including summer signing Carlos Baleba and long-term injury victim Matthijs de Ligt, did not participate in the match, further complicating Carrick's situation.

In the face of mounting frustrations from fans, especially about ticketing issues and the club's heavy debt, Carrick acknowledged that while fans are understandably upset, he believes it is essential to remain focused on the longer season ahead. He stated that the club is committed to improving and achieving more, indicating that the team's spirit remains intact despite these challenges.
