Nigeria reached the quarter-finals of the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals in Morocco with a 2-1 victory over Mexico in Rabat on Thursday, October 30, 2026.

The Flamingos started strong, pressing hard against the Mexican team, while their opponents made quick attempts through Citlalli Reyes and Natalia Perez in the 4th and 7th minutes, respectively. Nigeria held their ground as Kanyinsola Yusuf and Mary Dunstan made efforts on goal in the 29th and 30th minutes.

The deadlock was broken in the 40th minute when Oluebube Umejiaku executed a solo effort, maneuvering past three defenders to slot the ball past goalkeeper Lopez. The first half concluded with the Flamingos leading, demonstrating dominance and confidence throughout the match.

As the second half began, Nigeria continued to control the game. Head Coach Hakeem Busari made his first substitution, bringing in Precious Oscar for Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, who had suffered a knock in the first half. Nigeria doubled their lead in the 71st minute as Mary Dunstan found the net from close range, marking her first goal of the tournament.

Despite the challenge, Mexico fought back firmly, pushing for a consolation goal. Their efforts paid off in the 10th minute of added time when Camila Campos shot past goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho, which made for a tense finish. However, the Flamingos managed to close out the match confidently and will next face Venezuela in one of the quarter-final matches of the tournament on Sunday. Venezuela advanced by edging Germany in their Round of 16 encounter on Wednesday.

Following the victory, the Senior Special Assistant to Mr. President on Grassroots Sports Development, Mr. Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye, pledged N2 million for the players. Additionally, the NFF Acting General Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, pledged N1 million.
