Guardians Come Back to Beat Rays in Game 1 of ALCS

Newsroom

ST. PETERSBURG -- Just one game in, the ALCS landscape looks different than most expected after the Guardians came back to beat the Rays, 7-3 , in their own house. The Rays now need to come up big in Game 2 with Freddy Peralta on the mound to avoid heading to Cleveland down 0-2, where the Guardians’ fans at Progressive Field will play a significant role just like they did during their incredible ALDS run.

Cleveland’s Game 1 victory relied on its excellent bullpen, which kept the game within reach behind Foster Griffin, but the offense also displayed encouraging power later in the game, highlighted by home runs from Chase DeLauter and Patrick Bailey. Central to this performance was José Ramírez, who is expected to deliver big moments throughout the series. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt emphasized, "José is our guy. When he gets going, when he gets on base, we know he's going to make some things happen. He puts pressure on the defense. The pitchers have to be quicker to the plate. It affects everything."

For the Rays, offensive contributions are essential, particularly from their top players Yandy Díaz, Jonathan Aranda, and Junior Caminero. They will also rely on Peralta to control the game more effectively than in his previous ALDS outing, where he pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed one run against the Yankees. Peralta has become one of the team’s best stories since joining from the Mets at the Trade Deadline.

Countering Peralta will be Parker Messick for the Guardians, who aims to recover from a less-than-ideal ALDS showing. Messick, a Florida native, expressed confidence in performing well at home, stating he felt good physically ahead of the game.

Game 1 felt closer than the score suggested, with Rays manager Kevin Cash noting the potential for tight games and that his team was “a big swing of the bat away multiple times.” The ALCS also holds historical significance; the Rays are still pursuing their first World Series title since joining MLB in 1998, while the Guardians last won the championship in 1948, marking the longest title drought in Major League Baseball.

Game 2 is currently underway at Tropicana Field, broadcasted on TBS, truTV, and HBO Max. Spanish-language broadcasts are available on UniMas, with radio coverage via TUDN Radio.

Starting Pitchers:
- Guardians: Parker Messick, who allowed one run on six hits and struck out six over 7 2/3 innings at Tropicana Field during the regular season.
