Carragher: Newcastle Faces Difficult Season After Everton Loss

Jamie Carragher described Newcastle as ‘flat and boring’ after their 1-0 defeat to Everton in the Premier League on Monday Night Football. The loss, which marked Newcastle's fourth defeat in five matches across all competitions, left the team in 13th place with just three wins from nine games. Newcastle was booed off the pitch at St James' Park, reflecting the growing frustration among fans. Thierno Barry scored the only goal for Everton, granting them their first away victory in the Premier League this season.

Carragher warned that Newcastle faces a tough season ahead, emphasizing that their recent performances have been unexciting. "I think it is going to be a tough season for them," Carragher noted. He believed the match against Everton was crucial for Newcastle, contrasting it with Everton’s greater need for a trophy after their own cup loss.

Newcastle's manager, Matthias Jaissle, who took over in August, had started on a promising note with creative draws against Liverpool and Bournemouth, and a victory at Tottenham. However, the team's home form proved problematic as they have now lost seven games at home in 2026, the most for any Premier League side. Their streak of failing to keep a clean sheet has run to 14 matches at home, a record for the club.

During the match against Everton, Jaissle's side failed to register a shot on target until the 85th minute, which compounded the frustration felt by fans. Jaissle acknowledged the fans' displeasure, admitting that the team could not execute their style of play effectively. "If you can't deliver when it counts, you don't deserve to win," he stated. He also highlighted their lack of bravery in possession, which contradicted the effective strategy they had previously employed.

Looking ahead, Carragher also noted the challenge Newcastle will face against Fulham, a team that had been performing strongly. He remarked that Newcastle needs to step up, especially with a young manager and several young players on the roster. The expectations from the fans are considerable, and there is a clear concern about the ongoing difficulties the team is experiencing.
