Newsroom

Ireland triumphed over Argentina with a decisive 42-12 victory at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, marking the start of their autumn series of Nations Championship matches on Friday night. Following the match, on the Ireland Rugby Social podcast, Gavin Andrews from BBC Sport NI interviewed Ireland's second row Joe McCarthy, as well as co-presenter and former Ireland scrum-half Conor Murray, to analyze the home team's performance. With upcoming matches against Fiji and South Africa, there was much to discuss regarding the team's recent win over Argentina.
Murray emphasized several standout performances, particularly that of Hugo Keenan, who scored a hat-trick. He stated, "Hugo stood out but he's always going to do that. He talks so much on the pitch and makes it way easier for the players around him... He looked incredibly fit, incredibly quick, explosive. He looked back to his best."
Murray also highlighted the promising partnership between half-backs Sam Prendergast and Craig Casey. "Craig and Sam marshalled the game really well. Sam can forget about his rocky start to his international career... He looked really sharp. He looks like he has bulked up... Craig Casey's passing was on the money and his kicking is top notch."
In discussing the forwards, Murray praised [Tadhg] Furlong and [Andrew] Porter, remarking on Porter's impressive return from injury. He noted, "His explosiveness in open play and his fitness, he's like another back row on the field."
On the team's depth, Murray observed, "The depth we have now is really impressive... Those players are now in the squad and they are pushing lads across the board, pushing the other boys to perform. I think Irish rugby is going from strength to strength and it's really impressive to see."
Looking to the next match against Fiji, Murray expressed confidence, stating, "They should beat Fiji. I think that's where Ireland rugby is at now." He noted that the competition within the squad has intensified, allowing players to vie for selection for the upcoming South Africa match.
Murray concluded that there remains a strong core in the team and emphasized the need for consistency and momentum, especially with respect for their next opponents, Fiji.
