Russell describes F1 title loss as 'tough to deal with'

George Russell remarked that his struggles in the 2026 season, during which his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli secured the drivers' title, had been "tough to deal with" and had left him "often confused." Russell began the season as a favorite and won the first race, but his performance waned as Antonelli gained momentum. On Instagram, the Briton congratulated Antonelli for an "absolutely incredible season" and said the Italian "truly deserved the championship."

Russell reflected, "Now feels like a pretty suitable moment to speak from the heart. This season started off exactly how I had hoped but it very quickly unraveled with tough luck and poor performances. It has been the first proper season of my career where I have had more bad days than good. Has it been tough to deal with? Yes, very. Has it been tough to pick myself up week in, week out? Yes, very. Confusion at times? Often. All I know is that I have given it my all and 2026 was not meant to be my year."

Throughout the season, Russell secured three victories, while Antonelli claimed nine. Finishing sixth in the Mexico City Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton took first and second, respectively, meant that he dropped to fourth in the championship standings. Russell had started the Mexico race in second place behind Hamilton but faced difficulties due to an energy deployment glitch off the start line, which left him with reduced power. Additionally, a misjudgment resulted in him colliding with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar, leading to a spin and a 10-second penalty for Russell.

Russell expressed gratitude towards his team for producing the best car and power unit of the season. After the race, he was emotional and close to tears while being weighed. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff allowed him to skip post-race media duties after witnessing his distress. Wolff stated, "I saw George after the race on the FIA scales. And obviously, he’s distraught about the situation. It was a great show of sportsmanship to go and see Kimi. I have known George for such a long time. He is going through a hard time, but he was also responsible in getting the young man into this team. His not doing the media work or leaving the track is absolutely understandable."

Russell concluded his Instagram statement by promising to give his all for the remainder of the season and into the next one in hopes of rediscovering the performance he has demonstrated for most of his career. In reaction, Antonelli acknowledged Russell's challenges during the season, noting that while Russell faced bad luck, he believed Russell would return stronger, stating, "He’s super-quick. He has shown this season that when he’s on it, he’s very hard to beat." Antonelli emphasized the importance of focusing on his own performance and preparing for a competitive next season.
