Sabalenka Overcomes Osaka at Madrid Open

In an intense match at the Madrid Open, world number one Aryna Sabalenka came from behind to defeat Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the fourth round, winning 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-2. This victory marks Sabalenka's 15th consecutive win of the year, and her ninth straight at this tournament. The match lasted two hours and twenty minutes.

After losing the first set in a tie-break, Sabalenka faced a break early in the second set but quickly leveled the score at 2-2. She continued to dominate, breaking Osaka again to take a 5-3 lead before eventually closing out the second set. In the decisive third set, Sabalenka powered through, conceding only three points and sealing the match with her sixth ace.

Speaking after the match, Sabalenka praised Osaka, reflecting on her strong performance and the challenges she posed throughout the match. "I'm happy [Osaka] brought that fight; I had to fight through to level up my game," said Sabalenka.

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, put forth a commendable effort, particularly in the first set where she dominated the tie-break. However, Sabalenka’s experience and skill shone through as she adjusted her game and grew more aggressive as the match progressed.

In another significant match on Monday, American third seed Coco Gauff faced Czech player Linda Noskova, suffering a 4-6, 6-1, 6-7 (5-6) defeat. Gauff, who has recently battled a stomach virus, led the final set but couldn't maintain her advantage, resulting in Noskova's impressive comeback. Noskova will now face Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, who won her fourth-round match against Caty McNally with a score of 6-2, 6-3.

Looking ahead, Sabalenka will meet American Hailey Baptiste in the quarter-finals after Baptiste defeated Belinda Bencic 6-1, 6-7 (14-16), 6-3 in her fourth-round matchup. Sabalenka previously defeated Baptiste in the Miami Open quarter-finals last month as part of her successful title run.
