Newsroom

Castle Double Malt became the Title Partner of Rugby's Greatest Rivalry on July 14, marking a significant chapter in the brand's journey into South African rugby. The partnership is set to bring supporters closer to one of the most celebrated sporting properties through an extensive fan engagement program, which will include nationwide watch parties and a range of experiences designed to celebrate this monumental rivalry.
The partnership was officially launched at the iconic FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, where rugby legends, current Springboks, representatives from SA Rugby and New Zealand Rugby, media, and invited guests were present. Former Springbok Gcobani Bobo hosted the event, which featured a performance by an Impi Zulu warrior, setting a vibrant tone for the celebration.
The launch included discussions among leaders from South African Breweries, SA Rugby, and New Zealand Rugby about the significance of the title partnership. Furthermore, Springbok legends Bakkies Botha and Bismarck du Plessis, alongside former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick, shared their reflections on defining moments and encounters in rugby history.
As the event transitioned to future considerations, current Springboks Kwagga Smith and Lukhanyo Am discussed the upcoming fixtures and their opportunity to contribute their own legacy to the rivalry. Since their first match in 1921, the Springboks and the All Blacks have clashed more than 100 times, collectively winning seven men's Rugby World Cup titles.
Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the unique challenge presented by the rivalry: "Few rivalries in world sport have challenged generations of players to raise their standards quite like the Springboks and All Blacks. Castle Double Malt understands the essence of this contest—both its intensity on the field and the values that have defined it for over a century."
Vaughan Croeser, Vice President of Marketing at South African Breweries, affirmed that becoming the Title Partner represents a pivotal moment for Castle Double Malt. He stated, "There are few partnerships that embody that belief more naturally than the Springboks and All Blacks. We are proud to celebrate this legacy while connecting supporters to Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry."
Gcobani Bobo reflected on the deeper connections forged within the rivalry. He noted, "Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry isn’t just about the games; it encompasses the conversations and friendships that linger long after the match ends."
Former All-Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick commented on the special nature of the rivalry, stating, "There was never a tougher challenge than facing the Springboks, and every test demanded everything you had. This rivalry has always pushed both teams to improve, and that respect carries on for life."
As Rugby's Greatest Rivalry approaches, Castle Double Malt aims to honor the defining moments of the game, celebrating the smooth and rough aspects of rugby and the camaraderie that has inspired generations of fans. Cheers to the smoother side of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, brought to you by the Official Title Partner, Castle Double Malt.
