Kyle Tucker's Struggles and Potential Turnaround

Kyle Tucker's 2026 struggles have been significant for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who signed the outfielder as a free agent last winter alongside reliever Edwin Díaz. While the team remains on track to clinch another NL West title, they have not received the expected performance from Tucker, who has had a disappointing season thus far.

After a red-hot first half with the Chicago Cubs last year, which ultimately saw him selected as an All-Star for four consecutive seasons from 2022 to 2025, Tucker has faced challenges this season with a .239/.334/.376 batting line and only nine home runs over four months. Among players with at least 300 plate appearances, his 99 wRC+ ranked 114th out of 170. His performance has starkly contrasted his prior seasons when he was considered a top-10 hitter.

Tucker's struggles cannot be attributed simply to health; he has started 97 of the team’s 106 games, facing only occasional back spasms. He shows minor declines in several areas of his game. For instance, his strikeout rate increased from 15% to 19%, although this figure is still below the Major League average. His walk rate has dropped from 15% to 12%, yet remains better than the league's average.

Moreover, his defense, once a strong asset, has declined. However, there have been signs of potential improvement, notably two home runs in a recent weekend series at Citi Field, his first home runs in nearly a month.

Tucker's expected outcomes on barrels have changed significantly; previously near the 70th percentile in turning batted balls into barrels, he now sits at the 37th percentile—indicating fewer high-quality hits. This drop in barrel percentage could explain his less productive season. Statistical analysis shows that he has roughly 19 barrels so far, significantly below his usual output of around 32 by the end of July.

His batting average and slugging percentage on non-barreled balls have remained consistent over the years, signaling that any issues are likely linked to a scarcity of barrels rather than a general decline in hitting ability. If he were to recover even a few of these missing barrels, projections suggest that his stats would improve dramatically—possibly hitting .253/.344/.440 instead of his current averages.

Tucker has expressed frustration with his performance this season, stating, "There are times where I like to see the ball coming in, put a swing on it, and I can visualize the ball coming off the bat and doing what I want with it, but it doesn’t really go that way. I’ve just got to battle for the next pitch and continue on with the at-bat." However, Tucker's recent performance may signal a resurgence, should this be the start of a turnaround.
