George Russell experienced a significant setback during the Hungarian Grand Prix when an engine software issue caused him to remain almost stationary on the grid at the race start. This incident followed an engine failure on Saturday that led to a replacement being fitted prior to the race. The root of the problem was a water leak induced by Russell hitting a curb, resulting in a new engine being required for the following day.

As the race commenced, a software mistake triggered anti-stall on Russell's Mercedes, costing him several positions. This incident underscored an overall challenging weekend for Russell, who later acknowledged that he needed a break to recharge after a first half of the season marked by more difficulties than successes.

Russell highlighted that his performance in Budapest mirrored his frustrations throughout the season. Even without the engine issue, he believed that finishing in the top three during qualifying would have been unrealistic. Misfortunes, including the technical glitch at the start, compounded his already tough weekend.

The anti-stall issue was particularly telling in examining what transpired during the start. Initially reported as a potential driver error, it was soon clarified that it stemmed from a larger technical problem beyond Russell's control. Toto Wolff, the team principal, noted that Russell lifted off the throttle during the launch procedure while the engine was revving high. However, this adjustment was a reaction to the glitch, not its cause.

During the start sequence, both Russell and his teammate Kimi Antonelli had reached approximately 30% throttle during the preparation phase. While Antonelli's engine speed remained stable, Russell’s engine climbed excessively, leading to a situation where he was forced to modulate his throttle input. As Russell tried to launch from the grid, the engine revs significantly dropped, activating the anti-stall mechanism.

Telemetry confirmed these performance irregularities. Russell's throttle position indicated he was attempting to manage an uncontrollable engine. Ultimately, Russell's early rev drop severely impacted his momentum and performance, proving detrimental to his race due to the compromised starting technique. He acknowledged the problems, stating earlier signs of such issues were present during pre-season testing, although he could not pinpoint the exact cause of the glitch that day.
