Saransh Jain earns maiden India call-up for Sri Lanka tour

Saransh Jain earned his maiden India call-up for the Test series against Sri Lanka scheduled for August 2026. The 33-year-old off-spinning all-rounder from Madhya Pradesh entered the squad following an injury to Washington Sundar, who was ruled out of the series opener due to a hamstring injury sustained during the recent ODI series against England.

Jain had showcased impressive form during India A's tour of Sri Lanka, scoring an unbeaten 70 runs and later taking six wickets in the second four-day fixture. His consistency and performance made him a logical choice for the team.

Domestically, Jain’s overall first-class records indicate that he is a capable all-rounder. He has accumulated 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75, including two centuries, in addition to claiming 188 wickets at an average of 27.30 over 54 matches. Additionally, Ravindra Jadeja has been cleared to return after recovering from tennis elbow, joining a squad that maintains core members. Jasprit Bumrah leads the pace attack, with both him and batter Sai Sudharsan's selections being contingent on fitness clearance. Notably, Nitish Kumar Reddy was not selected for this tour.

Despite earning a spot in the squad, Jain faces the challenge of breaking into India’s starting XI, as the spin department has established players like Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Manav Suthar. Jadeja’s experience is vital for the team, which is still recovering from a tough home season, including a 0-2 series loss to South Africa.

If Sundar's recovery takes longer or the management seeks extra batting depth, Jain's all-round capabilities may become an asset. For now, however, he is more likely to serve as a bench option rather than a guaranteed starter.

The Test series will feature two matches: the first in Galle from August 15-19, 2026, and the second in Colombo from August 23-27, 2026.
