Mohamed Salah Joins Trabzonspor Amid Liverpool History

This October marked the 50th anniversary of the first encounter between Liverpool and Trabzonspor in European football. The two clubs faced off in the second round of the European Cup in 1976, a match that did not impress many connected to Liverpool. Manager Bob Paisley famously described the team hotel as a “doss house” and disparaged the ball, likening it to a “pig’s bladder” that was unsuitable for even local teams. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the food, comparing it unfavorably to rations he had in the Western Desert while serving in Montgomery’s Eighth Army.

Before their inaugural trip to Turkey, Liverpool expressed concerns about their accommodations, prompting them to send someone to inspect the hotel. Currently, in a new chapter of Liverpool-Trabzon connections, Mohamed Salah has agreed to play for Trabzonspor for the next two years. Fans celebrated his arrival in large numbers, recalling a similar excitement when Paul ‘Tall Paul’ Onuachu arrived on loan from Southampton.

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan addressed the media, emphasizing Salah’s global superstar status and the necessity of signing such a player. He praised Trabzonspor’s recent achievements in Turkish football, despite finishing third in last season's Super Lig, and the aforementioned signing was part of a strategy to signal their ambitions. With a reported contract worth €17 million per year, alongside an agreement on image rights and a share of merchandise sales, the club was keen to enhance its image.

He is a footballer and a global brand. I believe he can add much more to Trabzon’s brand value.” Another fan remarked on the significance of Salah’s transfer, saying, “This is a huge transfer.
