Legends Match Announced to Honor Nigeria’s Golden Generation

Afreximbank, through its Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme, and TopTier Sports Management unveiled a landmark Legends Football Match to celebrate Nigeria's iconic mid-1990s football generation. The match, scheduled for 8 November 2026 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, will form part of the CANEX WKND 2026 programme and will gather football legends from Nigeria, Africa, and beyond.

This event celebrates 30 years since Nigeria's historic triumph at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and honors the generation that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and represented Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Temwa Gondwe, Director of Creatives and Diaspora at Afreximbank, indicated that the initiative aimed to acknowledge the achievements of a generation that reshaped perceptions of African football.

"The 1996 Super Eagles did more than win Olympic gold; they re-wrote the global narrative," stated Gondwe, adding that the Legends Game would serve as a significant platform to discuss future commercialization and empowerment of African athletes.

Chichi Nwoko, Founder and CEO of TopTier Sports Management, emphasized that the initiative was not just a tribute but also an opportunity to examine how athletes can receive better support during and post their careers. "Thirty years ago, a generation of Nigerian footballers showed the world what African talent was capable of. The Legends Football Game is our way of saying thank you to them," Nwoko explained, highlighting the need to build infrastructure for athletes' enduring careers.

Former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi echoed the importance of the initiative, stating that it should reflect on how corporate social responsibility can establish sustainable welfare for former athletes. He mentioned that a pension scheme for footballers should be a norm, given that many from his generation are struggling financially.

Amokachi stressed the role of media and corporate bodies in making the November event successful, urging everyone to contribute to ensuring a memorable gathering for the legends.

The announcement also facilitated an emotional reunion of many former players at the Lagos Continental Hotel, including Mutiu Adepoju, Garba Lawal, Alloy Agu, Finidi George, and Victor Ikpeba. They exchanged memories and celebrated the legacy of the 1994 team, which won Nigeria’s second Africa Cup of Nations and reached the round of 16 in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
