Wasim Akram Reflects on Imran Khan and Pakistani Cricket

Wasim Akram expressed his deep feelings toward Imran Khan and Pakistani cricket in an interview. The former cricketer, known for his 19-year international career, conveyed that he misses his mentor and friend, Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023 on corruption charges that he denies.

In an open discussion, Akram stated, "Imran Khan was my mentor. He’s my friend, I miss him a lot. I haven’t spoken to him for three years." He emphasized his concern over the political turmoil surrounding Imran, adding, "It’s so unfortunate, politically, what’s happening with him. The court of law is the court of law. But as far as his health is concerned, there can be no compromise on that."

Imran Khan, 73, has faced significant challenges during his imprisonment, including deteriorating health and an eye condition that threatens his vision. His sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, have expressed concerns for their father's well-being and have sought better healthcare for him.

The Pakistani government has denied claims of mistreatment in prison, asserting that Khan has received numerous visits and adequate care since his imprisonment began. However, fears remain regarding the conditions of his confinement, with concerns about isolation and lack of proper facilities.

The interview that sparked public concern involved Khan's sons describing the harsh conditions in which their father is kept. Following the broadcast, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lodged complaints against the media outlet, and the situation escalated with threats from players not to continue a match unless their concerns were addressed.

Akram acknowledged the complexity of the situation, mentioning that he saw the interview and shared the public's concern. "There was a bit of uproar here after that...It’s difficult to believe, and hard to know what to believe right now," he stated.

When discussing political implications, Akram noted, "I can speak my mind, nobody will tell me what to do... Whatever decision has been made by the court of law, we must all kind of have to go along with it."

In his memoir, 'Sultan', Akram detailed the impact Imran had on his life and career, recognizing him as a significant influence and a childhood hero. The bond between the two remains, with Akram longing for their previous interactions.
