'Drop me a message' - Kildunne seeks new opportunities after Quins departure

England rugby player Ellie Kildunne expressed uncertainty regarding her next club following her recent exit from Harlequins. The 26-year-old, who became a notable figure in the sport, acknowledged she did not plan to leave and was surprised by the announcement made by Harlequins on Tuesday. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Kildunne described her feelings of being "gutted" about leaving The Stoop.
"It was news I don’t think I was prepared for," Kildunne stated during her Rugby Rodeo podcast. "I didn’t have plans to leave. It was as much a shock to me as everyone else."
Reportedly grappling with personal challenges, including a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) last year, Kildunne has faced difficulties that may have influenced her tenure at the club. Additionally, there have been reports of strained relations with the coaching staff due to her tardiness for team meetings.
Having joined Harlequins from Wasps in 2021, Kildunne is now open to offers from other clubs. "Everyone is wondering where I am going, and currently I don’t know," she mentioned. "I wish I had more of an idea and a plan. The most important thing to me is to be in a place where I can carry on being my authentic self and keep progressing to be the best rugby player I can be, challenged by my teammates and coaches.
"Any clubs out there that want to take me, just drop me a message!"
While Kildunne has several options available, speculation surrounds potential moves to clubs like Sale, who aim to attract top talent, or Bristol Bears, recognized for their marketability efforts in recruitment. Nevertheless, both teams are not currently comprised of ideal scenarios for her. Additionally, moving to clubs like Gloucester-Hartpury may seem appealing; however, they have recently extended contracts for players in her position.
Kildunne’s friend, Jess Breach, plays at Saracens, but that path seems less certain for Kildunne as well. Ealing Trailfinders could provide a convenient turn, given their proximity to Harlequins and a solid roster featuring England captain Meg Jones. Exeter may also have available space following the departure of seven players.
As she reflects on her time at Harlequins, Kildunne concluded, "I am excited for what next season brings for me, but what it brings for Quins too. I wish them all the best, I wish all the girls a great season, and I know when I play against Quins - whoever it is for - I know I am going to be so welcomed at The Stoop by the supporters and the team as well."
