Cubs' Daniel Palencia Receives Updated Injury Report
Chicago Cubs closer Daniel Palencia has been sidelined with what was initially diagnosed as a mild lat strain. After undergoing an MRI, manager Craig Counsell provided an optimistic update on April 21, stating that the revised diagnosis could allow Palencia to be activated within two weeks.

The Cubs had placed Palencia on the injured list last week, retroactive to April 14, due to a left oblique strain, and have been gathering information on his condition. As the team prepares for a road trip to the West Coast, Palencia may resume a throwing program, which would be a significant step towards his return.

Palencia made a strong impression during last year’s playoffs, leading Counsell to confirm him as the Opening Day closer at the start of spring training. His confidence soared after playing a pivotal role in Team Venezuela’s emotional run to a World Baseball Classic title. "He’s responding very well right now," Counsell noted, adding, "We’re probably looking at, optimistically, two more weeks."

In the meantime, the Cubs have shown resilience in managing their pitching staff, which has faced multiple injuries. Despite these setbacks, the team has allowed two runs or fewer in 12 of their first 22 games, a feat only accomplished twice before in the live-ball era (since 1920).

Counsell provided further updates on the pitching staff:
- Matthew Boyd, the club’s Opening Day starter, is set to be activated off the injured list to start Wednesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
- Porter Hodge, a promising reliever, underwent major elbow surgery, with a recovery timeline of up to 14 months.
- Hunter Harvey, who has a history of injuries, has been cleared to restart his throwing program, although he will need a minor-league rehab assignment.
- Phil Maton is assessing his next steps after experiencing right knee tendinitis, which has affected his performance.

Maton emphasized the importance of the team's depth, stating, "All bullpens in baseball have that next-man-up mentality. There are always days where guys are down. Somebody has to step up and do a job. It’s just really good to see. It’s a really resilient group."

As the Cubs continue to navigate their pitching challenges, the return of Palencia could provide a significant boost to their bullpen as they aim for a successful season.
