Pep Guardiola does not expect tributes in final game

Departing Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola told the club and fans that he does not expect any lasting tributes during the final game of the season against Aston Villa, stating, "When you're old, you can look at the memories." Guardiola is more focused on cherishing the memories of his incredible career at Manchester City rather than on any honors on the day.

Daily Mail Sport reported that Guardiola will officially step down as Manchester City manager following the Premier League's final match against Aston Villa on Sunday. While supporters are hopeful that the newly expanded North Stand will bear his name, Guardiola maintains that the personal memories he created during his tenure are far more significant than any potential tributes.

"The club don’t have to do anything, honestly," Guardiola remarked. "The important thing in our lives is that when you look back, you can look with a big smile and say ‘that was good.’ Bernardo (Silva) and John (Stones) can feel that. We spoke about it over the last few days. When you’re old, a grandfather, you can look at the memories. That is the most important thing in life."

He expressed a note of sarcasm regarding his future, saying, "Whatever happens at the end of the season – and when I extend my contract for three more years – I can look back and say, ‘how nice has that been?’"

Guardiola has also noted the challenges ahead in the final match against Bournemouth, a squad that has not lost since January and which seeks qualification for the Champions League.

"They don’t let you breathe," he commented. "With 10 days to prepare for the game, I expect a more intense, aggressive and demanding team. And then you have to be smart to read what you have to do. It’s a final. We are tired, yes. But humans have an incredible ability to, when you are completely dead, if (your mind) is in the right spot, you do an extra run, an extra focus. I'm pretty sure in the last two games, the players will give everything."

Guardiola has urged his players to seize the moment, leaving nothing behind as they aim to catch Arsenal in the final stretch. During his tenure, the team has won three league titles on the final day under his guidance (2019, 2022, and 2024).

Guardiola concluded with a forward-looking mindset, preferring that the destiny of the title is in their control but acknowledged that in football, uncertainties always remain.
