Harmer and Cook lead Essex to massive victory over Sussex

Essex achieved a commanding victory against Sussex, winning by 100 runs during the Vitality Blast match held at Hove on July 3, 2026. Captain Simon Harmer played a pivotal role, contributing an impressive 46 runs off just 17 balls, while also taking two wickets and executing a run-out. Essex set a challenging total of 204 for 6, thanks in part to Michael Pepper's solid innings of 47 runs.

Sussex struggled in reply, collapsing to 34 for 5 as Sam Cook excelled with the ball, returning figures of 4 for 7, marking his best bowling performance. The team's batting woes deepened as Cook dismissed two top-order batsmen in his first over, and Sussex's innings quickly unraveled. Harmer's impressive over saw him hit 31 runs from Henry Crocombe, further inflating Essex's total after a slow start.

Essex's total was boosted by a flurry of runs in the last few overs, including 15 runs conceded by Crocombe and 17 by Tymal Mills in the 19th over. Harmer’s explosive finish included several sixes that ultimately demoralized the Sussex side.

Despite some efforts from George Alsop who scored 35 runs, Sussex was ultimately bowled out for a mere 104 runs in 17.3 overs. This result saw Sussex continue their disappointing season, failing to bat out their full innings in six of their nine matches.
