MotoGP to Showcase at F1 US GP in Austin
MotoGP's promoter worked on plans to stage a demonstration during Formula 1's United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in October. The integration of MotoGP with the F1 event has long been a dream for many motorsport fans, and it may now be closer to reality. According to Autosport, Liberty Media, the commercial rights holder for both championships, explored the possibility of putting MotoGP machinery on the track at the U.S. Grand Prix scheduled for the end of October.
The concept involves MotoGP bikes completing a series of demonstration laps over the F1 weekend, allowing spectators in Austin to experience the series up close. However, due to a scheduling conflict with the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island—set to be the last race held there under the current agreement—current MotoGP riders would not be available for participation. Instead, the showcase would feature MotoGP show bikes, which are operational exhibition machines based on current or previous specifications.
An early proposal suggested that former riders associated with each manufacturer or team would ride the bikes, but these details remain to be finalized. The MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (MotoGP SEG), responsible for overseeing the championship's commercial and promotional endeavors, opened discussions with manufacturers to gauge their willingness to participate in this marketing initiative, seen as essential for expanding MotoGP's presence in the United States.
One unresolved issue is the logistical costs related to transporting the bikes and personnel needed for the demonstrations. Traditionally, teams have utilized road bikes adorned with MotoGP liveries for promotional purposes. However, new agreements between the championship promoter and teams now include commitments for maintaining fully operational MotoGP prototypes for exhibition events like this. While finer details are still being discussed between MotoGP SEG and the manufacturers, both parties view the proposal as an attractive opportunity to enhance MotoGP's fan base in a key target market.
Since Liberty Media's acquisition of Dorna, speculation has increased regarding the potential for F1 and MotoGP to coexist during the same event. Conversations have occurred at an executive level about this possibility, although no concrete plans exist for a combined F1 and MotoGP Grand Prix in the near future.
