Lando Norris of McLaren secured pole position at the Dutch Grand Prix, beating George Russell of Mercedes by 0.102 seconds during a tight qualifying session at Zandvoort. A late shower of rain influenced the drivers' lap times as they rushed to complete their runs.
The final laps saw Russell's teammate, Kimi Antonelli, briefly take the lead before being surpassed by Norris, who had initially taken the top spot in the final session. Antonelli, the championship leader, ended up 0.031 seconds behind Russell, while Oscar Piastri, Norris' teammate, was just 0.009 seconds slower than Antonelli.
Despite expectations for significant rain, only minimal droplets fell, which allowed Lewis Hamilton to successfully navigate his championship rival Charles Leclerc, securing fifth place as the Ferraris filled the third row. Max Verstappen, racing in his home Grand Prix, qualified for seventh, with his stand-in teammate Liam Lawson placing eighth after a solid performance that was only 0.0115 seconds slower than Verstappen.
In a frantic final session, teams raced to finish their laps before the rain could worsen. Russell attempted to gain position on Norris as they exited the pits but had to back off before starting his lap. Ultimately, the rain was not heavy enough to alter track conditions significantly.
Norris commented that the rain might have inadvertently helped his lap time by cooling the tires. He mentioned that although his lap did not feel exceptional, the need to push for time helped him gain more than he lost. Russell attributed his second-place finish to a mistake at Turn Eight, where his tires overheated. Antonelli, too, lamented a misstep on his final lap, stating he lost vital time by being cautious in the wet conditions.
Hamilton, with his last-minute strategy, managed to improve his lap time and edged out Leclerc by 0.064 seconds to claim fifth.
