Liam Slock secured his first professional victory on Sunday at the GP Gippingen, delivering a memorable performance that the cycling community will not soon forget. The 176km UCI 1.1 race in Switzerland featured several notable competitors, but the 25-year-old rode confidently, believing he had a shot at winning as the race progressed through its 11 laps. Slock stated, "The race had actually been going really well all day. We were always where we needed to be every lap. At one point, a large group got away, and I was able to follow comfortably."
As the race neared its conclusion, Slock bridged the gap to Aleksandr Vlasov and Richard Carapaz, who had attacked in the finale. "That took a lot of energy because those guys are among the very best. But once I made it across, I tried to save as much energy as possible. I thought that if I managed to do that, I might be able to win," he explained.
In the uphill sprint to the finish line, Slock established a significant gap over Vlasov, with Carapaz closely trailing behind. Feeling a sense of safety with his lead, Slock decided to celebrate in the final meters before crossing the finish line. However, the celebratory moment turned into an unexpected crash as Slock lost control of his handlebars due to the wind, causing him to fall. "The wind blew my handlebars away, and down I went," he remarked, noting that it was a situation worth framing in his memory.
Despite the fall, Slock crossed the line just ahead of Vlasov, and he was relieved that he won the race. "Luckily the win came with it, otherwise this would probably have been the fail of the year," he humorously said. "It feels a bit silly, but above all, I’m just incredibly happy." His victory at GP Gippingen marked a major milestone in his professional cycling career.
