Ayyoub Bouaddi: A World Cup Wonderkid Pursued by Manchester City

Ayyoub Bouaddi captured attention during the ongoing World Cup as he represented Morocco after previously playing for France at the youth level as recently as March 2026. Bouaddi's early passion for sports emerged when his parents enrolled him in gymnastics classes at the age of three, quickly followed by achievements in cycling, handball, tennis, and badminton. According to L’Equipe, he averaged an astounding 18.5 out of 20 across all school subjects, exceptional in the French education system. At 15, he won an eloquence contest for young footballers held at the Elysee Palace, presenting a speech on whether results take precedence over methods, in front of First Lady Brigitte Macron. He later achieved a scientific baccalaureat a year early in June 2024 and is currently pursuing a mathematics degree at the University of Marseille while maintaining a central midfield position for Lille, who secured automatic Champions League qualification by finishing third in Ligue 1.

In May 2026, Bouaddi switched his international allegiance from France to Morocco, driven by his parents' heritage. His determination saw him become the second 18-year-old to play for Morocco at a World Cup, after teammate Bilal El Khannous, and he notably contributed to the team's progress to the quarter-finals against France, the nation of his birth. Although Morocco lost this encounter at Gillette Stadium, Bouaddi's impressive development under coach Mohamed Ouahbi indicates he is rapidly ascending to the upper echelons of football, drawing interest from clubs like Manchester City.

Born in Creil, a town of about 36,000 in northern France, Bouaddi's background is steeped in aspiration. His father, a banking executive, and mother, an HR manager in the aeronautical sector, instilled a strong appreciation for education within the family, with one of his sisters holding a PhD in pharmacy. "Ayyoub's family is exceptional," stated Slimane Layadi, president of AFC Creil. "They have emphasized the importance of hard work and education in achieving success."
