Boks Ready for England in Nations Champs Opener

Newsroom

The Springboks, led by assistant coach Mzwandile Stick and captain Siya Kolisi, expressed expectations of facing a highly motivated England team in their opening match of the Nations Championship at Ellis Park on Saturday. Stick noted that despite the Springboks being ranked first in the world and England sixth, the rankings would hold no weight when the teams clash in Johannesburg. The match is scheduled to kick off at 17h40 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.

Stick highlighted the energetic performances from England’s club players, pointing out young fly-half Finn Smith, who is being favored over experienced George Ford, as indicative of England’s approach. “Their backline has players with massive speed and an X-factor,” Stick remarked, indicating their capability to perform well in the match. He added that the Springboks had prepared thoroughly, recognizing the match would be a challenging affair, particularly focusing on the scrum as England prides itself in that area.

Kolisi reinforced the notion that South Africa should not consider itself as the outright favorite despite having home advantage and a higher ranking. He stated, “We listen to our coaches, and we know what it feels like to be beaten,” emphasizing the importance of humility and preparation before the match. Kolisi acknowledged that every matchup against England is significant and expected an intense battle, especially given their past encounters.

Speaking of the challenges posed by England’s Tom Curry in the loose trio, Kolisi described him as “one of the toughest guys” he has faced, recalling previous matches including the 2019 Rugby World Cup Final. He conveyed excitement for the upcoming contest, emphasizing the pressure inherent in facing a strong opponent and that being comfortable would be a mistake.

Despite England’s disappointing Six Nations campaign, Kolisi remained cautious about underestimating them, citing their near-victory over France as a testament to their quality. “They are going to be psyched up for this match and will pitch up physically,” Kolisi stated, underlining the lessons learned from their previous World Cup encounter, which highlighted the potential for England to capitalize on mistakes.

Ultimately, Kolisi expressed that the Springboks need to execute their game plan effectively, especially regarding set pieces and kicking, to avoid being in a challenging situation against the formidable England side.
