Sinner Dominates Norrie to Equal Winning Streak

World number one Jannik Sinner continues his impressive form at the Madrid Open, defeating Britain's Cameron Norrie in a straight-sets match, 6-2, 7-5, to advance to the quarter-finals. This victory marks Sinner's 20th consecutive match win, as he aims for his fourth ATP Masters 1000 title of the season.

Sinner, who recently clinched titles at Indian Wells, Miami Open, and Monte Carlo, equals his best performance in Madrid, having last reached the quarter-finals in 2024. In the quarter-finals, Sinner is set to face either Czech player Vit Kopriva or 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar, who are scheduled to compete later.

The match against Norrie was dominated by Sinner early on. After a brief strong start from Norrie, who held serve to love in the opening game, Sinner broke twice to secure the first set comfortably, 6-2. Norrie attempted to rally back in the second set, including a strategic underarm serve which did not go as planned, but he managed to break back after being down 5-5. However, Sinner managed to capitalize on his chances, converting a crucial break as he served for the match.

This win not only further extends Sinner's streak but also positions him as only the second player in tennis history to win his first 20 Masters 1000 matches of the season, after Novak Djokovic achieved the same feat in 2011 and 2015.

Following the match, Sinner commented on the unique surface in Madrid, stating that it's quite different from other courts and can affect performance. "This surface is very very different to all the other surfaces so it’s very tough to get the right feedback and sometimes you feel like you are not playing your best," he noted.

Despite these challenges, Sinner expressed excitement for advancing to the quarter-finals, a significant achievement for this tournament, given his limited history competing in Madrid.
