Supreme Court Confirms Neymar's Acquittal

The Supreme Court of Spain has officially confirmed the acquittal of Brazilian football star Neymar and former Barcelona presidents from corruption charges linked to his controversial transfer to the Catalan club in 2013. This ruling comes after a lengthy legal battle initiated by the Brazilian sports investment firm DIS, which claimed it was financially harmed by the transfer due to its ownership of a significant portion of Neymar's rights during his early career at Santos FC.

The legal saga began in 2015 when DIS alleged that the true value of Neymar's transfer was concealed, arguing that they were not informed about an exclusivity contract between Neymar and Barcelona that was signed in 2011. However, a Spanish court had previously acquitted all parties involved, including Neymar, his parents, and former Barcelona presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, of any corruption or fraud in a highly publicized trial in 2022.

Despite DIS's appeal against the verdict, the Supreme Court stated that the evidence presented revealed inconsistencies in the accusations. The court emphasized that there was no corruption in business dealings or fraud committed by Neymar, his representatives, or FC Barcelona. Instead, the decision to expedite Neymar's signing was described as a sporting decision made by the club amidst competition from rival teams eager to secure the player's talents.

DIS had sought to recover €35 million, claiming it was cheated out of its rightful share from the transfer, which Barcelona stated cost €57.1 million in total. The breakdown included €40 million paid to Neymar's family company, N&N, and €17.1 million to Santos FC, of which €6.8 million was allocated to DIS.

Initially, prosecutors had pursued a two-year prison sentence and a €10 million fine for Neymar, but they unexpectedly dropped all charges against the accused parties. This acquittal not only clears Neymar of legal troubles but also allows him to focus on his football career, as he has recently returned to Santos after a successful stint in Europe.

In addition to the corruption case, Neymar had faced tax fraud allegations related to the same transfer, which were settled in 2016 when Barcelona paid a fine of €5.5 million to resolve the issue with prosecutors. The Supreme Court's ruling marks a significant victory for Neymar, allowing him to move forward without the burden of legal disputes.
