Coco Gauff advances in Rome with fighting spirit

In the Italian Open 2026, Coco Gauff demonstrated resilience on the clay courts by overcoming match point to defeat Iva Jovic in the fourth round. Gauff, the reigning French Open champion, faced difficult circumstances as she trailed Jovic, an 18-year-old American, 7-5, 5-3 in Rome. Despite the win, Gauff acknowledged that she must elevate her performance to replicate her journey to the Italian Open final last year and make a significant impact in her upcoming title defense at the French Open, starting on May 24. Her need for improvement was highlighted by Iga Swiatek's dominant victory over Naomi Osaka, where Swiatek won 6-2, 6-1.

Gauff encountered various challenges during the match against Jovic, including difficult conditions with wind and the distraction of fighter jets above the Foro Italico venue. After Jovic failed to convert match point, her game deteriorated following an injury that involved a cut on her finger, allowing Gauff to gain the upper hand. Gauff expressed her pride in her performance, noting the quality of Jovic's play amid challenging conditions.

As Gauff prepares to face eighth seed Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals, she reflected on her mental state during the match. "In my previous round, I was not good mentally on the court, and this was a complete 180. It shows I can continue to be positive in the most part," Gauff shared.

The tournament continues to see other notable matches, with Swiatek set to compete against fifth seed Jessica Pegula, who won her match in straight sets. In addition, Elena Rybakina, the second seed, delivered a dominant performance against Karolina Pliskova, winning 6-0, 6-2 to advance further in the competition.
