Alain Giresse Critiques Morocco After World Cup Exit

Following Morocco’s elimination in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, criticism has continued to mount, with Alain Giresse being one of the most vocal. In an interview with Afrik Foot, the former Gabon coach expressed surprise at the Moroccan team’s performance against France, describing their attitude during the match as shocking. The much-anticipated clash saw the Lions of the Atlas, who had been playing exceptionally well throughout the tournament, struggle significantly against the French side.
Giresse remarked, "In a sense, yes, because since the start of the competition, Morocco had been producing attractive football, attacking, and being quite captivating. I actually expected the Lions of the Atlas to be a bit bolder. But I can also understand their caution.” He added that when facing a strong team like France, whose attackers are formidable, it is not illogical to show some restraint. Giresse reflected on the previous encounters, noting that during the second half in 2022, Morocco had been able to dominate the French, which was not the case in their recent encounter. The Lions, trailing after Kylian Mbappé’s opening goal, were forced to open up, which led to a second goal from Ousmane Dembélé, sealing their fate.
As discussions continue about Morocco's performance, questions remain about the direction of the team under coach Mohamed Ouahbi, who is now under scrutiny as the World Cup progresses.
