Lukas Nerurkar, a rider for EF Education-EasyPost, sustained multiple injuries after being hit by a vehicle while training at home in England on July 2. Following the incident, which occurred while he was visiting family after competing in the British National Championships, the 22-year-old British cyclist was hospitalized for two days and underwent surgery on his collarbone.
EF Education-EasyPost provided a medical update detailing the extent of Nerurkar’s injuries, which included a broken and dislocated collarbone, a fractured sternum, a fractured vertebra, a broken rib, and a small puncture in one lung. In a statement released by the team, Nerurkar expressed gratitude that his injuries were not worse, describing the accident as "scary that a car can do that to you so easily."
The young athlete reflected on the impact of the crash on his competitive season, expressing disappointment over missing upcoming races in Austria and Poland, events he was looking forward to attending to capitalize on his summer form.
Currently, Nerurkar is focusing on his recovery, which includes short walks with his parents and dog, as he begins rehabilitation from the surgery on his collarbone. He noted that the nature of the injury required extensive work beyond simply placing a plate, as it involves several damaged ligaments.
Nerurkar's recovery timeline, as estimated by the team's head doctor Jon Greenwell, is set at approximately six to eight weeks, during which the punctured lung is expected to heal on its own. This season marks another injury-interrupted year for Nerurkar, who previously faced setbacks due to a jaw fracture and concussion in 2025 following the Trofeo Laigueglia. Before this crash, he had showcased strong performance in June, including a notable eighth place finish at the GP Gippingen.
