European Football Associations Withdraw Support for Infantino

European football associations withdrew support for Gianni Infantino as global pressure mounted to terminate his troubled presidency at Fifa. The Football Association (FA) of England became the most prominent UEFA member to stop endorsing Infantino’s bid for re-election next year, following serious controversies over his failed plan to sell a stake in the World Cup to private investors.

Wales and Serbia also announced the withdrawal of support, joining Finland, which had already set a precedent last week. These federations had initially expressed backing for Infantino’s continued leadership, but widespread discontent across Europe prompted this collective retraction. The Swedish Football Association, one of the five UEFA member associations that previously did not support Infantino, confirmed its opposition ahead of the election scheduled for March.

Despite the FA’s earlier support for Infantino, it consistently criticized his controversial Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative, both publicly and privately. On Saturday, the FA called for a "full and robust review of Fifa’s leadership and governance," indicating a shift in stance. Following their decision, the Football Association of Wales issued a statement reaffirming its withdrawal of support, citing "recent failures in good governance and leadership" as key reasons for the change.

The Football Association of Serbia echoed similar sentiments, stating that recent events had seriously affected the reputation of Fifa and its president, compelling them to take a "logical and rational step" to withdraw support. The Swiss Football Association, however, stopped short of abandoning Infantino, calling for more discussions before reaching a conclusion regarding their stance.

More associations are expected to remove their support for Infantino, signaling a significant vote of no confidence against the embattled president, who has been under fire since the collapse of his FFE initiative. While some federations from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Concacaf have criticized Infantino, they have not yet publicly rescinded their previous endorsements. Ensuring that this occurs may be crucial in efforts to prompt his exit.

Only 15 countries have publicly backed Infantino since he shelved the FFE project, but there appears to be a growing momentum among UEFA nations to swiftly position a coordinated effort against his re-election. Victor Montagliani, president of Concacaf, has emerged as a potential successor if Infantino is ousted and is understood to align with UEFA and AFC leaders in advocating for new direction at Fifa.

Additionally, UEFA's legal representatives have instructed Infantino and relevant staff, including Arsène Wenger, to preserve all documents related to the FFE initiative, hinting at possible legal ramifications stemming from the plan. There is also speculation surrounding an expected meeting between Infantino and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which has been denied by the US State Department amidst Infantino's efforts to garner support for his continued presidency.
