Xabi Alonso supports Cole Palmer's return to form

Xabi Alonso backed Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer, describing him as 'world class' and expressing optimism for his return to form this season. Alonso's comments came after Palmer faced a challenging previous season plagued by injuries, which significantly affected his contributions to Chelsea. The 2025-26 campaign saw Palmer struggle particularly with a groin issue, alongside a minor injury from fracturing his little toe at home, ultimately contributing to Chelsea's disappointing 10th place finish in the Premier League.

Before Chelsea's upcoming match against Fulham, Alonso highlighted Palmer's determination to prevent further injuries and reclaim his form. 'Cole is determined to enjoy his football,' Alonso stated. 'He wants to be fit. He wants to feel healthy.' He emphasized Palmer's goal to establish a solid connection with his teammates, suggesting optimism for a productive season ahead.

Alonso explained, 'If we are able to reach him and he feels that flow in the game and connects well with the players, I'm sure his level is top class, world class, and that he will have a great season.' He noted that sometimes players need to endure difficult periods to learn and grow, and Palmer is now working hard on injury prevention.

Reflecting on Chelsea's previous match against Fulham, where they lost 2-1 while fielding just ten players due to an early red card to Marc Cucurella, Alonso addressed the discipline issues that plagued Chelsea throughout last season, which saw them receive eight red cards, more than any other Premier League club.

The manager expressed that there is no strict protocol in addressing player discipline, stating, 'It depends on the context... You can have a red card. It's football. It can happen.' He underscored the need for emotional control to maintain game control, which is crucial in avoiding excessive disciplinary actions.

As for the starting goalkeeper position, Alonso did not confirm if Robert Sanchez would start against Fulham over Mike Penders. 'We want healthy competition in all the positions,' he remarked. 'We will see. The pitch is the boss of everything. I don't decide. The players need to show me.'
