Man Utd's Misery: Pressure on Carrick and Recruitment Issues

Michael Carrick was under pressure as Manchester United's manager, but questions arose whether poor recruitment had contributed to them becoming a mid-table team. In a recent analysis, it was highlighted that Carrick, the club's eighth permanent boss since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, faced major scrutiny after a poor start to the season. His tenure witnessed a significant 3-0 loss at Old Trafford against Bournemouth, prompting the club to contemplate a fourth managerial change in four years.

The discussion turned to whether Manchester United was truly an elite team underperforming or, in fact, a mid-table team whose prior results had presented a misleading façade during the post-Ferguson era. Research indicated that the club's managers have historically overperformed in terms of points relative to 'expected' points, accumulating a total of 669 points, the fifth-highest in the Premier League in the last decade. However, the Sky Sports expected points model, which measures the quality of a team's scoring chances both for and against each game, suggested that United's true total should only be 613 points. This discrepancy indicated that United had gained 56 points more than expected.

Since 2016, only Everton outperformed their expected points by a greater margin among Premier League teams, raising questions about the underlying factors contributing to this phenomenon, including skill in finishing, goalkeeping, opponents' inefficacy, and simply luck.

Carrick had averaged 1.85 points per game compared to an expected average of 1.37 during his tenure, notably appearing as the biggest overperformer among recent United managers. Despite underperforming this season with three points less than expected, he had led the team to a commendable third-place finish with 71 points last season when the predicted total was 61.

Critically, he had helmed United through a crucial phase, with heightened expectations following his ability to elevate the team from seventh to third position in a matter of months. Yet, this result potentially flattered the team's performance as there had been a pattern of United finishing higher than expected in eight of the last ten seasons, based on performance quality. As discussions continued, Manchester United fans expressed a desire for a return to the glory days.
