Arne Slot stated that his connection with Liverpool and its fans "goes beyond football" after being sacked from his position as head coach. The Dutchman was dismissed on Saturday, May 30, 2026, a year after leading the club to its second title in 30 years, following a disappointing campaign that saw the team finish in fifth place.
In an open letter published in the Liverpool Echo, Slot expressed that winning the Premier League title was "beyond special." He wrote, "The connection we share goes beyond football, beyond European nights under the Anfield lights or the sound of You’ll Never Walk Alone being sung from The Kop."
Slot articulated his gratitude, noting, "You made me feel welcome from the start and helped me on the path. That is something I cherish." He emphasized that winning the league title was "even more meaningful" because fans were able to celebrate together after the 2020 title success, which occurred amid the pandemic.
He described the "shocking" incident when 134 fans were injured during the celebrations on Water Street in the city center, due to a car driven by Paul Doyle, who was later sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison after pleading guilty to numerous charges. "I was privileged to witness firsthand your spirit of compassion and unity," Slot remarked, expressing hope that this spirit would help secure justice for those who have campaigned for accountability over the years.
Slot praised the "love, compassion, and support" he received from the Liverpool family following the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident, calling it "extraordinary" and noting that the fans' tribute to the player would remain with him forever.
In expressing his gratitude, Slot also thanked the players, staff, and club owners. "It has been a pleasure working with you all," he said. He viewed Liverpool’s 20th league title as an achievement shared among all involved and a significant part of the club’s history.
"I leave with complete confidence in what lies ahead. The players who have given so much to this club, who have upheld its values and helped create so many unforgettable moments, have built foundations that will endure," Slot concluded. He acknowledged the emergence of a new generation of players prepared to contribute their own stories while emphasizing that "change is part of football," affirming that Liverpool will continue to make its people proud.
