Giroud reflects on his bond with Mbappe

Olivier Giroud shared a touching message to Kylian Mbappe soon after France's victory over Senegal, where Mbappe broke Giroud's record to become the all-time top scorer for Les Bleus with 58 goals. Giroud texted him: 'Congrats bro, I am really happy for you. Well, I kept the record for three-and-a-half years, and it was great - but now it is yours, and you have to go again... oh, and bro, don't forget to save me your jersey!'. He had not caught up with Mbappe yet, but a member of the coaching staff informed him that Kylian got the message and would call soon.

Giroud reminisced about a special photograph that encapsulates their relationship, which was taken after he surpassed Thierry Henry's record to become France's leading scorer against Poland at the 2022 World Cup. Kylian provided the perfect assist for a goal and celebrated by jumping into Giroud's arms, prompting the acknowledgment: 'you know how much I love you, bro'. Giroud felt honored that it was Mbappe who broke his record, noting he now appears between Kylian and Thierry in the scoring list.

He emphasized that Kylian is sometimes misunderstood and perceived as arrogant, while in reality, he possesses just confidence and ambition. Giroud commended Mbappe for respecting former players and speaking positively about their contributions when Giroud ceased playing for France. Giroud stated, 'It’s actually just confidence, and ambition, he shows when he talks.' He recalled when he first met Kylian, noting his maturity and ease in discussing his aspirations.

Looking forward to the future, Giroud expressed hope that Mbappe could lead France to win a third World Cup title. He praised Kylian's aspirations and demanded nature, noting his selfishness in a positive context as a necessary trait of a striker. Giroud recounted a memorable moment from the 2018 World Cup, where despite not initially starting, he contributed to the team's success by assisting in a crucial goal.

With 14 World Cup goals, Mbappe trails only Miroslav Klose and Lionel Messi. Giroud believes Kylian has plenty of opportunities to set more records, including aiming for the most caps for France, as he currently has 99.
