Kane Makes History as England Beats Croatia in Thrilling Opener

England commenced their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice to lead his team to a promising start. This win marked England’s first 4-2 victory at a World Cup since their iconic win against West Germany in the 1966 final, giving new manager Thomas Tuchel a successful debut at a major tournament.

The match began with Kane opening the scoring after referee Clément Turpin awarded England a penalty due to Luka Modrić’s foul on Noni Madueke in the box. Although Croatia's goalkeeper Dominik Livaković saved the initial penalty, Kane converted the retaken kick for the opening goal.
