UniCal to Host 50,000 Athletes at 2026 NUGA Games

The University of Calabar (UniCal) is set to host 50,000 athletes from over 50 universities across Nigeria for the 2026 Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA) Games. This announcement was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Offiong Offiong, during a press conference on June 19, 2026. The 28th edition of the biennial sporting event is scheduled to take place from November 14 to November 24.
Prof Offiong assured that the university is fully prepared to deliver a memorable event which will focus on integrity, fairness, and sportsmanship. Athletes will compete in 28 different sporting events during the games. The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that hosting the NUGA Games will serve as a platform to promote academic and athletic excellence while strengthening unity among Nigerian universities.
In terms of security, Prof Offiong mentioned that the university is collaborating with relevant security agencies to ensure the safety of all participants and visitors, acknowledging Calabar as one of the most peaceful cities in Nigeria. He urged stakeholders, including government bodies, corporate organizations, alumni, and development partners, to support the successful organization of the games.
He expressed appreciation for the Cross River Government's continuous support and partnership in organizing this sporting festival. Additionally, Prof Offiong highlighted the important role the media plays in mobilizing public support and enhancing the visibility of the upcoming games.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that hosting the NUGA Games would also expedite the development of modern sports facilities at the university. He called on the NUGA Council to maintain their guidance and cooperation as preparations for the event intensify. As a legacy project for the 2026 games, UniCal plans to construct a sports complex that will serve as a lasting reminder of the event and contribute to nurturing future national and international sports champions.
The NUGA Games were first held by the University of Ibadan in 1966 and the University of Calabar last hosted the event in 1990.
