La Vuelta Femenina Stage 3: Two Groups in Breakaway

During Stage 3 of La Vuelta Femenina, two breakaway groups formed, with Felicity Wilson-Haffenden from Lidl-Trek and Sterre Vervloet of Lotto Intermarché Ladies leading the peloton by 3.44 minutes as they approached the 100km mark. The race unfolded at an average speed of approximately 36km/h.

As the race progressed, Wilson-Haffenden began the day 5.20 minutes behind in the general classification, while Vervloet trailed at 19.56 minutes, neither of them posing a threat to the overall leaders. This raised the question of whether the main pack would let them compete for the stage win or if they would prefer a different showdown among the sprinters.

Around 90km into the race, the dynamics shifted as Garua's group struggled to catch Wilson-Haffenden and Vervloet, who maintained a lead of 3.10 minutes. Later, it became clear that the two groups which had initially broken away were still separated, although the gap narrowed as Wilson-Haffenden and Vervloet led by 2.19 minutes, with their pursuers closing in at 20 seconds.

Reports indicated that Marina Garau from Vini Fantini-BePink became the best-placed rider among the breakaway, potentially the virtual race leader soon. The race saw significant challenges, particularly as teams like Mayenne were eager to make their mark. Their riders, including Justine Gégau, set out to chase down the leading duo.

With medical updates, it was noted that Eleonora Ciabocco from Picnic-PostNL had to withdraw from the race after sustaining injuries in a previous stage. Following her unfortunate circumstances, the race continued with 118 riders, even as others, including Noemi Rüegg, withdrew, expanding the list of those who could not complete the competition.
