Current MLB Playoff Picture at Midseason

Newsroom

As of June 28, 2026, Major League Baseball reached the halfway point of the regular season, with most teams completing their 81-game threshold over the weekend. As the division and Wild Card races begin to take shape, it’s time to review which teams are poised for the postseason and what matchups would unfold if the playoffs commenced now.

American League

Byes: Rays (1) and White Sox (2)
The Rays finished the 2023 season with 99 wins, leading the Majors, and now stand at 47-33, narrowly ahead of the 48-34 Yankees. With the AL East once again shaping up to be competitive, the White Sox, surprising many this season, are also positioning themselves for a playoff spot and perhaps a first-round bye. The Guardians are right behind Chicago, making the postseason race intense.

Wild Card Series matchups:
- Rangers (6) at Mariners (3)
- Guardians (5) at Yankees (4)
Currently, the Yankees occupy a Wild Card position, competing closely with the Rays for the AL East lead. Cleveland holds a solid 43-40 record. However, the final Wild Card slot remains uncertain as several teams, all below .500, chase after it. Just missing the cut are the Athletics and Astros, each one game back. The Blue Jays, who had a disappointing follow-up to their previous season's success, also dropped out of contention last month but are only two games behind a Wild Card spot.

National League

Byes: Dodgers (1) and Brewers (2)
No surprises here as the Dodgers, the back-to-back World Series champions, hold an MLB-best 53-30 record. The Brewers, who led the Majors with 97 wins in 2025, follow closely but are facing competition from the Braves, who are only 1.5 games back.

Wild Card Series matchups:
- Padres (6) at Braves (3)
- Cubs (5) at Phillies (4)
Among the Dodgers, Brewers, and Braves, only two teams will secure a first-round bye. The Phillies, having rebounded from a rough start, are also in contention to win the NL East, complicating the playoff landscape. Currently, the Cubs have a decent playoff outlook, although their inconsistencies have clouded their standing. The Padres hold the final Wild Card position, just ahead of the Marlins and Cardinals, who are in close pursuit but are not yet in. The Cardinals remain a half-game behind a playoff spot, having struggled after a strong start with a four-game losing streak.
