Emerging Talents at Manchester United's Academy

As opportunity knocks for several young talents at Manchester United's academy during pre-season, only a select few will join the first-team squad when the new Premier League season kicks off. United expressed their willingness to loan out most Under 21 players who participated in the opening friendly matches against Wrexham and Rosenborg, except for promising players like Shea Lacey, Jack and Tyler Fletcher, and JJ Gabriel.

This week, the club had made decisive moves regarding the futures of some youngsters who have lingered on the periphery of the first team. Goalkeeper Radek Vitek, left-back Harry Amass, and midfielders Dan Gore and Toby Collyer, all of whom spent last season on loan, are unlikely to feature prominently for the first team this season. Both Vitek and Amass are available for sale or another loan deal with an option to buy.

Vitek, who played the most minutes during the friendlies, became a target for Championship clubs such as Middlesbrough after a successful loan spell at Bristol City last season. In pre-season, Michael Carrick provided significant game time for young academy players. Among those who played in both games in Norway were Shea Lacey, Harry Amass, and 15-year-old JJ Gabriel.

Amass earned a goal and an assist against Rosenborg, raising his value to around £6 million after a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich. As United seeks a third central midfielder after spending £85 million on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, it appears that Gore and Collyer’s best chance for regular playing time lies with the Under 21s. Hull City is interested in re-signing Collyer, following a productive loan last season, and Gore has returned after a successful loan at Rotherham.

Despite the competition increasing with the expected return of United's World Cup stars, several youngsters aim to make their mark in the remaining pre-season fixtures against Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Leeds, and AC Milan. The club’s youth system is well-regarded, and the early indications from the pre-season matches in Helsinki and Trondheim suggested that academy players seized their chances.

Lacey scored the opening goal against Rosenborg, while Jaydan Kamason impressed with two assists as substitutes stretched the lead to 5-0. United's first-team stars are likely to feel the pressure from the emerging talent eager for opportunities.

Lacey, who started against Rosenborg, highlighted his potential with a well-taken goal shortly after half-time. The 19-year-old winger from Liverpool showed his versatility by playing in a No 10 role and connecting play. His talent was recognized when he was invited to train with the England senior squad last October, marking two appearances for the team.
