Mickaela Bottega Comments on Being Withdrawn from Senegal's Squad

Newsroom

Mickaela Bottega, a Senegalese goalkeeper, expressed her disappointment after being withdrawn from the Lionnes de la Teranga squad for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 in Morocco. This decision stemmed from an incomplete administrative procedure that did not meet the deadlines set by the CAF. Bottega was among four players who were removed from the official Senegal roster. Along with her, Mariama Deen Touré, Aminata Keita, and Mady Soumaré also faced the same situation. Their withdrawals were due to naturalization processes that were not finalized before the CAF's registration deadline for players on the CMS platform. Despite being present during the team's preparation with head coach Mame Moussa Cissé, they were unable to be registered for the competition taking place in a few days in Morocco.

After leaving the training camp, Bottega shared her emotions on social media, stating, "Unfortunately, I had to leave the national team’s gathering during the preparation for the Africa Cup. My situation is linked to administrative procedures that unfortunately could not be finalized in time." The goalkeeper also expressed her sorrow over this premature end to her adventure with the Lionnes, noting that she truly wanted to defend her country's colors. "I still have a hard time realizing that this beautiful journey ends here, after all the efforts, sacrifices, and investment to wear this jersey with pride."

The Senegalese Football Federation confirmed that the administrative processes concerning the four players are ongoing and that their regularization remains a goal.
