Chase believes West Indies mismanaged spin options

Roston Chase expressed that the West Indies may have miscalculated their bowling strategy during the second Test against Pakistan at Queen's Park Oval. On a pitch that saw spinners claiming 20 of the 28 wickets throughout the match, West Indies opted for just one frontline spinner instead of the two fielded by Pakistan. Chase, who typically bowls long spells alongside left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, faced limitations due to a finger injury that had been troubling him since prior to the series.

In his post-match press conference, Chase reflected, "I don't want to say we misread the pitch, but we didn't think that it was going to spin as much from so early." Pakistan secured an eight-wicket victory, leveling the two-Test series 1-1.

Chase acknowledged that his injury hindered his full contribution, stating, "I think that was a bit of a dilemma for us." He suggested that the team could have accommodated an extra spinner, mentioning uncapped Joshua Bishop as an option, but insisted that it should not have been at his expense since he was still able to bat. "Captaining the side, I would never leave myself out to play anyone else," he said.

Looking back on the match, Chase noted that the West Indies' fast bowlers took too long to understand that the conditions required a different approach against Pakistan's batters. Pakistan managed to score 266 for 2 in response to the West Indies' first innings total of 344.

"We took a bit too long to adapt to the conditions," Chase elaborated. "The wicket wasn't one that was assisting the fast bowlers as much as the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, which hosted the first Test."

Chase emphasized the need for patience, advising the bowlers to focus on restricting runs rather than attempting to force wickets. Their initial strategy to overpower the batsmen allowed Pakistan to accumulate runs rapidly.

Additionally, seam-bowling allrounder Justin Greaves was sidelined due to a leg injury sustained while batting in the first innings, affecting West Indies' attack. Chase remarked that Greaves' absence as he was the Player of the Match in the first Test with seven wickets, including a five-for in the first innings, was detrimental to their performance in Port of Spain.
