In the wake of Nigeria's 0-2 loss to Spain in their first match at the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Poland, Margareta Mary Obi, provided vital support to the Falconets. Despite the disappointment, Ambassador Obi attended the match held at Stadion Sosnowiec and did not let the team's performance deter her spirits. Alongside mission staff, she made significant efforts to uplift the players and the technical crew after the game.

Ambassador Obi took time to interact with the Falconets, urging them not to be disheartened by their opening defeat and to focus on their upcoming challenge against China. She highlighted the positive aspects of their performance, reminding the team that they had played well and still had reasons to be confident moving forward. As a gesture of encouragement, she also brought Nigerian food to share with the players, which helped brighten their spirits and provided a taste of home while they were in Poland.

The presence of Ambassador Obi, along with her encouraging words, significantly improved team morale as they prepared to face China in their next match. The Falconets would return to the pitch at Stadion Sosnowiec on Thursday evening for a crucial game against the Chinese team, who had just convincingly beaten New Caledonia 5-0, placing them at the top of Group F, ahead of 2022 champions Spain on goal difference.

Historically, Nigeria and China have met twice in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals. In 2006, during the tournament in Russia, China defeated Nigeria 3-0 in the group stage at Podmoskovie Stadium. However, in 2018 in France, a late own goal by a Chinese player led to a 1-1 draw, allowing the Falconets to progress to the quarter-finals.

Coach Moses Aduku stated on Wednesday night, “We have put the match against Spain behind us and are totally focused on the clash with China. The players are ready to come out stronger for the match against China.”
