All You Need To Know About San Siro Demolition Date
Newsroom

The San Siro demolition date is edging closer after years of uncertainty surrounding the future of one of football’s most iconic stadiums. Milan and Inter are now moving forward with plans to build a brand-new shared stadium in Milan, with the current expectation that demolition work on San Siro will begin in 2031, after both clubs relocate to the new arena.
Current redevelopment plans suggest the San Siro demolition will take place sometime after the new stadium opens during the 2030-31 season. Construction on the replacement stadium is expected to begin in 2027 on land adjacent to the current San Siro site. Once the new venue is fully operational, demolition work on large parts of the existing stadium is expected to begin shortly afterwards. Despite constant speculation over the past few years, the stadium will continue hosting both Milan and Inter matches until the new ground is completed.
The two Serie A clubs believe San Siro is no longer financially competitive compared to modern stadiums across Europe. Although the stadium remains one of the most historic venues in world football, both clubs have repeatedly argued that renovation costs would be too expensive and commercially restrictive compared to building a new arena from scratch.
Plans for a new stadium first emerged in 2019, but the project faced delays due to political opposition, heritage concerns, and disagreements over whether San Siro should instead be renovated. However, recent developments have significantly accelerated the process, with both clubs now fully committed to the demolition and rebuild project.
Not all of San Siro will be demolished; current proposals suggest that parts of the stadium’s iconic exterior could remain as part of a redeveloped public space surrounding the new stadium. However, most of the seating bowl and interior sections are expected to be demolished once Milan and Inter move into their new home.
As things currently stand, the expected timeline is: 2027: Construction on the new stadium begins; 2030-31: New stadium expected to open; 2031 onwards: San Siro demolition begins. Until then, fans will still have several more seasons to visit one of football’s most legendary stadiums before the famous San Siro skyline eventually changes forever.
