In the 2026 French Open, Joao Fonseca, 19, secured a spot in the quarter-finals by defeating two-time finalist Casper Ruud in a four-set match. Fonseca, who had previously fought back from two sets down in his last two matches, confirmed that his third-round win over Novak Djokovic was no fluke by overpowering the 15th seed. He won the match 7-5, 7-6 (10-8), 5-7, 6-2.
This victory marked a significant moment, as Fonseca, along with 19-year-old Rafael Jodar and 20-year-old Jakub Mensik, both reached the last eight at a major tournament for the first time, highlighting the emergence of new talent in the sport. In another match, Mensik battled Andrey Rublev, coming back from a two-set deficit before breaking Rublev in the fifth set to secure his place in the quarter-finals against Fonseca. Jodar defeated compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta, setting up a match against second seed Alexander Zverev, the oldest player in his half of the draw.
Fonseca’s performance was marked by his powerful forehand, which contributed to 21 of his 28 groundstroke winners. He demonstrated great defense, using his athleticism to extend rallies. Despite both players committing significant unforced errors—52 from each—Fonseca minimized forced errors compared to Ruud, making a crucial difference in the game.
In particular, on critical points Fonseca saved seven of nine break points and capitalized on four of 13 opportunities he had to break Ruud’s serve. His resilience paid off even after being broken in the 12th game of the third set, as he quickly regained control in the fourth set. Although he did not replicate his three-ace finish against Djokovic, he served a powerful shot down the T to set up match points, closing out the match with efficiency.
Meanwhile, world number three Zverev underscored his status as a favorite by securing a straight-set victory over Jesper de Jong, advancing to the quarter-finals for the sixth consecutive year. Zverev, 29, is still in search of his maiden Grand Slam title despite reaching finals at three different majors. His path appears to have opened significantly now that top competitors like Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic are eliminated.
Zverev's match saw him encounter minimal opposition after a rocky start. After allowing his opponent a strong beginning, he regained his rhythm to close out the match with a score of 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-1, showcasing his service strength and deft play at the net. With fewer matches requiring five sets, Zverev’s preparation and experience could prove pivotal as he aims for the title.
